The C is for Collaboration

Entrepreneur magazine listed Tucson as an emerging entrepreneurial hub. I am not surprised. With organizations like Startup Tucson facilitating collaboration, the future is bright.

Tucson, Arizona has been my home for 10 years now. Previously I had been living in Philly working as a designer for a medical communications company. Although it was quite a change – it was a blessing to move to Tucson.

Tucson is a great city for having a small business. I am not sure if I was still living in Philly, I would have started my own graphic design business. I think I would have felt like a little fish in a big pond. The benefit to Tucson is that although there are over 500,000 people living here – it has a small town vibe.

What I mean about small town, is that I believe that when you do good job on a project for a client here, the word spreads rather quickly. It’s a very supportive community. I am a part of some very collaborative organizations here like Local First Arizona and Startup Tucson that promote local businesses.

It’s a lot cheaper to live in Tucson, than Philly. We are able to not only own a home in Tucson but we can afford a very cool office space. For those that don’t have an office – or like to work in a co-working space – Gangplank Tucson offers a working space in the middle of downtown Tucson. It ‘s a great place to share ideas, attend an educational event or just get some work done.

There’s a lot happening here! We can’t work all of the time – we need some fun things to do. You’d think because it’s the middle of summer that nothing is going on. It’s almost the opposite. In Tucson there’s so much to do and a lot of it is free! During 2nd Saturdays Downtown, Tucson is full of people, music, art, movies and great food! The whole thing is free and family friendly. I went last month and enjoyed dinner at Reilly Craft Pizza & Drink and a colorful cocktail at Scott & Co.

The future of the city of Tucson is bright. Through collaboration and support by the community more businesses will begin and hopefully stay in Tucson.

What else makes a city great for small business owners?
